Recruiting is one of those professions that you have to love to do it well if youre not committed, its not worth doing at all. Everything we do on this site is to help recruiters make better decisions and progress their careers. But if you feel like youre a badeanstalt recruiter and just cant get traction in the career, its a good idea to get out of the profession. Both corporate and agency recruiters are usually passionate about their careers, and if youre not, chances are the profession wont take you anywhere worth going. The great thing about recruiting is that the skills you learn are highly translatable to other professions. If you particularly enjoy certain aspects of your job, it might be a good idea to shift into one of these otheranalogouscareersHuman Resour ces If you find that you enjoy the organizational and relationship oriented aspect of working with people in their careers, but do not enjoy the pitch, you might want to consider a career in HR. HR Generalists, Benefits Coordinators, and other functions require highly detailed understanding of corporate policies, benefits systems, laws, and technology. Human Resources can offer a great career path with progressive advancement.Career Counseling Some recruiters love helping candidates they will accidentally spend hours interviewing prospective candidates, helping them with their resumes, giving them career advice, and advising them on different industries and professions. It can be very satisfying to help people advance their interviewing skills or even help a candidate decide on a career. However, especially in agency recruiting, this type of relationship can get in the way of performance. Recruiters need to find a happy medium between volume and the depth in which they help candida tes. Career counseling has many different iterations, for example college career centers, career psychologists, job counselors, etc If the career mentoring aspect of recruiting is clearly what you enjoy most, one of these other professions might be a better career.sale If you relish the cold-calling and meeting aspect of recruiting sales, but dont enjoy selling air, product sales might be a better type of job for you. Recruiting salespeople typically thrive on relationship, service oriented client partnerships. Many professionals in recruiting sales find it incredibly frustrating that they are selling services that they dont know if they can deliver. If you hate this aspect of recruiting, you might do better selling a concrete product software, technology, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, etcMarketing Recruiting sales and even sourcing candidates involves a very strong element of marketing. Recruiting salespeople often market their companys services through mailings, Internet ads, and other advertising vehicles. Recruiters and sourcers also market to candidates by developing rich media recruitment campaigns, great job ad copy, etc If you enjoy the actual marketing process and developing and analyzing data, a career in marketing might be a good alternative. A good test is if you think of your potential candidates as a target demographic, it might be time to move on.Social Media Recruiters naturally gravitated toward social media outlets because they are natural relationship builders and because reaching out to broad numbers of professionals fits with the recruiters job. However, social media can be a bit of a rabbit hole a recruiter too caught up in social media and social networking might never come out. If you enjoy the technical elements of social media, enjoy writing and community building, you might consider making a career change. There are a lot of new jobs in social media administration, webcopy-writing and marketing, and developing social media emplo yment campaigns. If social media has become more than a method of developing clients and candidates if your interest lies mostly with the tool itself it might be time to move on.If you feel like you cant succeed in your recruiting career, it might be time to examine why. It should be said that passion is a job requirement for a recruiter. If youre not 100% invested in your recruiting career, changes are you wont go very far.Recruiters often spend time trying to help candidates identify their real skills and true calling. It can be much harder to turn that perspective within. However, if you feel like a bad recruiter, this should be cause for further thought and examination of your career.

7 words that make you sound passive aggressive at work

7 aber jas that make you sound passive aggressive at work7 words that make you sound passive aggressive at workMaintaining healthy and happy relationships with coworkers is important to an overall healthy and happy work environment. And one way to do so is by avoiding language that might make you sound passive aggressive - an adjective no one wants to be.Refrain from using these seven stereotypically passive-aggressive words when interacting with people at work, and you can avoid unnecessary and unproductive tension in the office.1. FineUsing the word fine in the workplace is as obviously ingenuine as when you use it in your relationship. If youre describing something as fine, your coworkers are very much aware that said situation is, in fact, not fine.Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.2. Thanks in advanceThis phrase indicates that you expect someone to do something for you with out them having actually accepted to do said favor. Its a passive-aggressive way of communicating to someone that they have no choice but to complete your request.3. Per my last emailOn the technology side of the workplace, this phrase indicates that you believe you shouldnt have to explain yourself because it was thoroughly explained in the last message. Someone who is genuinely confused or maybe simply missed an email or two will note this obvious insinuation.4. In case you missed it The face-to-face version of per my last email. This phrase hints to coworkers that you know they heard and ignored whatever message you believe to be too important for them to ignore, and youre (im)patiently awaiting a response.5. SureThe word sure communicates to coworkers that youre technically saying yes, but you would rather be saying no. Just say yes, and prevent all further awkwardness and unnecessary friction.6. I thought you knewThis phrase hints at simple negligence. You are assuming the oth er person should know something that you chose not to inform him/her of. It could also make that person feel unimportant to you, as though he/she was not worthy of your time.7. I hope you dont mindThis phrase indicates that you are already doing/have already done whatever it is you are asking for permission to do. Basically, youre disregarding your coworkers professional opinion on the matter and doing what you want to do anyway, which no one appreciates.Avoiding these seven phrases can help to eliminate all hostility in the workplace while also improving relationships you have with your peers. This article first appeared on Fairygodboss.

Assistant Vice President Definition

Assistant Vice President Definition Assistant Vice President Definition If youve worked your way up the corporate ladder and youve achieved the position of assistant vice president or youre about to, youre getting near the top. Assistant vice president is typically one rung below vice president in much of the  financial services industry. Its a relatively common role within a firm, particularly for those in brokerage, securities, and investment banking. Skills, Qualifications, and Education Most large firms expect an assistant vice president to have earned an MBA in finance and have five years or more of hands-on work experience. A bachelors degree in any field may be acceptable to get in on the ground floor so you can work your way up and achieve some at least seven years experience. Experience can be even more important than the exact nature of your education and your degree, particularly with smaller companies.   In addition to the keen understanding of various areas of finance that your education and experience offer, you should be able to meet deadlines and perform well under pressure. Youll also need people skills. Even if you dont deal directly with clients, youll be expected to interact effectively with staff and other members of the management team. Superior communication skills are essential, including both oral and written.   Duties and Responsibilities The AVP role in some organizations is a senior management position. Assistant vice presidents may or may not supervise other employees, although they may be responsible for mentoring and guiding new hires. AVPs may serve as a team leader in project management or, depending on the nature of the firm, may work directly with clients. An AVP might be expected to manage analysis and oversight of investments on behalf of the firm.  The assistant vice president typically reports to the vice president and other senior members of the company. Salary Ranges The average salary of an assistant vice president is about $95,000 nationally as of 2018. The pay scale ranges from about $50,000 to close to $130,000. Just as in other sectors and other areas of business, location plays a big part- firms in major metropolitan areas and situated in financial hubs tend to pay more than those in outlying regions. The size and revenues of the financial firm invariably affect employee compensation.  For example, a large bank may have numerous AVPs and VPs throughout the organization so that the pay scale can vary depending on their role and responsibilities. However, in a small firm, an AVP title may carry more weight. Raises can be generous, which of course, is commensurate with performance and also depends on location and the firms revenues. Profit-sharing, bonuses, and commissions may also be paid depending on the nature of the firm.   Job Availability and Advancement Many financial firms fill top slots from within as they become available due to senior partners or staff retiring or moving on to other pursuits. The next rung on the corporate ladder from assistant vice president is typically vice president, and its common for the assistant vice president to move up to this role when a job opens up or if the firm grows and expands. Of course, the move up results in more responsibility but corresponds with an increased salary.   Alternate terms: AVP, Assistant VP

Fewer than 10% of tech startups are owned by women, study says

Fewer than 10% of tech startups are owned by women, study says Fewer than 10% of tech startups are owned by women, study says According to a 2017  Harvard Business School paper, the American dream of starting your own business  is not equally shared by everyone.Surveying data between 1990 and 2016, Harvard researchers found that 6%  of technology startups backed by venture capital are owned by women. When you break it down by race, the numbers get show even more divisions: Latinos  own only  2% of all VC-backed startups, and African-Americans own  less than 1%.The reason? The problem, researchers suggested, is that  the people in the room making decisions about women-owned startups  predominantly aren’t women. 91% of venture capitalists, the people who will fund dreams, are men. That makes a big difference. Through a process known as “homophily,” we hold  inherent biases that favor people who look and act like us, researchers said. That bias locks women out of potential  networking and mentoring opportunities. Only 19% of top executives are women and a Lean.org and McKinsey report said that mentorship pr events more women from joining their ranks. That means that the lack of women-owned businesses is not for lack of trying by women. There are many trained and skilled women studying innovation. More than 50% of people getting engineering and science bachelor’s degrees are women, according to the survey.Recognizing our secret biasesFew people set out to discriminate by gender, but biases can creep in even among the smartest and most capable people. If you feel ready to tackle yours, here’s how to start. And remember: bias against women has been shown to be perpetuated by men and women alike, so we could all use a look inside.1. How do you evaluate women’s performance?A separate study on Swedish venture capitalists looked into gendered decision-making in the room where it happens. In face-to-face discussions on final funding decisions, they found that the VCs questioned women’s entrepreneurship abilities- their credibility, knowledge and experience- more than they did for a mal e entrepreneur. What the study showed: investors would describe a man as “young and promising” and a woman as “young, but experienced.”2. How deep is your bench?  After researchers presented their findings to the Swedish government, it led to new structural-level strategies on how to better distribute government VC funds. On a management level, one obvious solution to closing the gender gap is to get women into the pipeline to bring up other women behind them. Female venture capitalists were more likely to invest their time and money into female entrepreneurs, the Harvard study found. 3. Cast a wide net  And if you’re a woman entrepreneur getting the door shut in your face, you’ll need to be proactive about seeking out role models, mentors, and networking opportunities for yourself. And that means casting a wide net beyond your personal circle and finding male and female mentors through social media, conferences, and “coffee?” emails. The founder of Care.com, Sheila Lirio Marcelo, told The New York Times, that that’s what she did: “Closing the gender gap in business is often a conversation that women have with other women…We absolutely need to provide a supportive community for each other, but if we’re truly going to level the playing field, men have to be part of the equation.”Working Mother recommends not limiting yourself to just one mentor. Mentors can’t fix and evaluate your career, and one may be better at advising you on negotiating deals than getting a promotion. The trick is to build a wide support network of people who can help you in any scenario. One study found that women who made it to the top of the corporate ladder had more long-term mentors than men.

The BEST Way To Prepare For An Interview

The BEST Way To Prepare For An Interview The BEST Way To Prepare For An Interview First of all, when you land an interview, give yourself a hearty congratulations â€" you deserve it! You made it to the short list. My philosophy is that if they’ve called you for an interview, they like you 75% of the way. They like the facts and figures they’ve read about you. Now the only remaining factor is to see if your brand, personality and style will be a fit with the organization. Give off a confident flair during this interview. Confidence is sexy. One of the best ways to demonstrate confidence is to approach the interview as if it’s a normal conversation â€" back and forth â€" with BOTH people {yeah, that means YOU} asking questions and giving answers. Remind yourself during the back-and-forth that you  deserve to be there. Also, tell yourself this: the interviewer wants  you to be the answer to his or her problem; the interviewer does not feel like engaging in a couple dozen interviews. They want to bring all this to a successful conclusion the exact same way you do. Here’s why you’re treating the interview like a conversation among colleagues (which you are; in most cases you’re colleagues in the same industry). A conversational stance detracts from the stance most people take on: that of being under the hot white police interrogation lights â€" NO! It’s a volley. Every time you answer a question, ask one of your own. It goes without saying the questions should not be 100% self-serving, so nothing about vacations or flex time, etc., at least not in the 1st or 2nd interviews. It's important to come armed with your own set of questions. Write them down and put them on a yellow legal pad inside a nice leather (or pleather) portfolio. You don't have to hide the fact that you have notes. Here are some perfectly intelligent questions to bring to the table: ? What kinds of processes are in place to help me work collaboratively? ? In what area could your team use a little polishing? ? What’s the most important thing I can accomplish in the first 60 days? ? Am I going to be a mentor or will I be mentored? ? How will you judge my success? What will have happened six months from now that will demonstrate that I have met your expectations? All of those questions envision you in the role, which is a perfectly reasonable vision to articulate. And, very important, towards the end of the interview, ask some key questions so you don’t walk out and spend the next several days wondering: ? Now that we’ve talked about my qualifications and the job, do you have any concerns about my being successful in this position? ? This job sounds like something I’d really like to do- is there a fit here? ? When is the anticipated starting date for this position? ? What is the next step in the hiring process? ? When can I expect to hear back? ? Whom should I reach out to if I have any further questions? You’ll feel confident, like you’ve entered that particular workplace, to conduct a business meeting. Another fantastic approach to interview preparation is to plan the key stories you want to tell. And remember: you're there to give your message, whether or not you are asked. So, the same way you have your interview questions readymake sure you have your key stories ready. Pro tip: write down your stories in bullet format, not in an entire paragraph. That way, it will be easier to glance down and be reminded of what you want to say, without having it look like you're reading. Stories have 3 parts: beginning, middle, and end. Keeping this in mind will help you to not ramble on too long or get mired in too much detail. Your stories should tell a) the original scenario; b) specifically what you did; and c) the positive results that came from it. Preparation beforehand is the key. Preparation puts you at ease. When you're at ease, you come off as natural and likable. That's a winning interview strategy.

This is the city where women are obliterating the pay gap

This is the city where women are obliterating the pay gap This is the city where women are obliterating the pay gap There is no debating that there is a pay gap. It’s a fact. A recent study found that the global gap has increased to 32%, which means that at its current pace, women have 217 years to go before they will be making as much as men. That’s a pretty long time.A 2016 survey found that women only held about  21% of technical jobs, which includes hardware, software, information services and consulting, at  60 of the largest U.S. companies and they hold 12% of engineering jobs. That’s why it is so refreshing to hear that in some cities - and the male-dominated field of tech - women are closing this gap, and in some cases making more. SmartAsset put together a list of the best cities in the U.S. (with at least 200,000 residents) for women working in tech jobs by looking at data for gender pay gap, income after  housing costs, women’s representation in the workforce, and percent growth in employment.Kansas City leads the way in closing the pay gapIt truly does pay to work in Washingto n, D.C., Kansas City, and Baltimore if you are a woman in tech. Now women in Washington technically took the top spot as there is a lot of opportunity for job growth there and women make up 38.5% of the tech workforce however they are still  only paid 91% of what men in the field receive. But the ladies of Kansas City actually out-earn their male counterparts, earning 2% more than men in tech do, on average.“Kansas City is the only city where the average female tech worker has earned more than the average male tech worker in all four editions of our study,” AJ Smith, VP of Financial Education at SmartAsset, told Ladders.  â€œWe saw women in tech earn more than their male counterparts, on average, in Detroit and Indianapolis in the 2016 and 2017 versions of this study, but Kansas City is the only place where the pay gap has consistently remained in favor of women.”Baltimore is also a great place for women working in tech as there is really good job security. Between 2013 and 201 6  the number of tech jobs grew by 36%. Philadelphia, Albuquerque, St.Paul, Arlington, New Orleans, New York and Indianapolis filled out the rest of the Top 10.Check out how other cities fared for women in tech and check out the full report here.

9 Box Matrix for Succession Planning and Development

9 Box Matrix for Succession Planning and Development 9 Box Matrix for Succession Planning and Development The performance and potential matrix are commonly referred to as the nine-box grid, nine-box matrix, or simply as “the nine-box.” The nine-box is one of the most widely used tools in succession planning and leadership development. It can be a valuable tool for anyone who works in talent management, or for any manager as a way to assess and differentiate a team or organization. How Does it Work? It is usually used to assess individuals on two dimensions: their past performance and their future potential. The X-axis (horizontal line) of three boxes assesses performance, and the Y-axis of three boxes (vertical line) assesses leadership potential. A combination of Y and X axis makes up the box within the grid that each employee is placed in. 1A High Performance/High Potential, 3C Low Performance/Low Potential, 2B medium performance/medium potential, etc. Picture the old Hollywood Squares game show or the introduction to the Brady Bunch, with each character sitting in one of nine boxes. While an individual leader can use the nine-box to assess their own employees, it has real value is when a leadership team uses it as a part of a “talent review” to have a discussion about the entire organization’s collective talent. Simple and Effective (95% of the Time) The beauty of the tool is in its simplicity and ease of use. With a little explanation and initial facilitation, managers usually can catch on quickly. It helps overcome many of the common pitfalls when it comes to talent assessment, including: Overemphasis on current performanceOverreliance on a single opinionA lack of assessment criteria, or inconsistent criteria Leadership teams (often engineers or scientists) will often try to overcomplicate it, by adding more boxes, definitions for each box, and all kinds of bells and whistles. It hardly ever improves the process and often adds more complexity than value. Free and Not Proprietary Other than people’s time, or a paid facilitator, there is no cost to using the nine-box. There are other ways to assess potential â€" formal instruments and assessment centers are great, yet they are also expensive. While many will criticize the lack of objectivity in using a nine-box to assess performance and potential, most organizations can’t afford to send every manager through a $10,000 assessment center. A Catalyst for Robust Dialog It’s not about filling out the grid â€" it’s all about the discussion. That’s a critical point that beginner teams often lose sight of. Managers, in general, are not very skilled when it comes to assessing talent, and are very hesitant to discuss other manager’s employees, or hear feedback about their own. This tool helps managers have those conversations in a professional, productive way. Framework and Structure While “candid and robust” is a good thing, without a framework, these conversations can get messy and sidetracked. With skilled facilitation, the nine-box provides a framework and roadmap to discuss each individual’s performance, potential, development needs, and  development plans. Helps Calibrate Criteria and Expectations It’s recommended that teams go into the talent review with a pre-determined, clear, consistent, definition of performance and potential. Sometimes those definitions don’t exist. Even if they do, they are often just words on paper not grounded in reality. By using this tool, teams have a chance to discuss what performance and potential  means. In fact, for a lot of managers in the room, it’s the first time they’ve heard their own bosses’ expectations, so you’ll see them discreetly jotting down notes and assessing themselves. It’s More Accurate Than One Person’s Opinion The accuracy of assessing performance and potential improves with multiple data points. Managers often have blind spots with their employees and are unaware of how they are perceived by others. These discussions can help shine a light on superstars and  poor performers. Facilitates Shared Ownership and Teamwork It is a ground rule for any talent management meeting and discussion: “We all, as a team, are collectively are responsible for building a stronger organization. We need to be candid, listen to each other, and help develop each other’s employees.”In a functional or segmented organization, talent development is often one of the few things a management team can actually work on together. It’s a Diagnostic Tool for Development A talent review meeting uncovers both individual and organizational strengths and weaknesses. The nine-box serves as a needs assessment for development actions that need to be taken. Many organizations now use nine-box talent reviews to discuss and agree on individual development plans (IDPs) for each employee. The nine-box can be a very effective tool to facilitate a discussion around performance and potential. While it’s not perfect and has its inherent pitfalls, its advantages far outweigh its disadvantages. For specific instruction on how to use the nine-box in a talent review, see  How to Use the Performance and Potential Nine-Box Matrix for Succession Planning and Development.
